When to start potty training?

Postby annie » Thu Jan 21, 2010 9:40 am

I know she is a little young now but when do we start trying for potty training and how do we go about it? I did read one article about going ahead and getting the little potty shortly after a year and just leaving it in the bathroom so it's not new and scary when you start trying to teach them.

It depends really when she shows an interest. We had a potty around for a while, and finally she refused to wear diapers at just after two. So I had to potty train her, and I did so in one day by keeping her on a lino floor that was easily cleaned :D

The ideal age is 2 y/o. There are no concrete methods that will guarantee your 2 year old will potty train when you are ready for him too, if he is not ready. Just always bear in mind that you just not push him, get mad, or yell if he isn’t doing it fast enough. Don't negotiate. Don't threaten. Don't get angry. As you place him on the potty, stay calm and firmly say, "Poopy goes in the potty." Keep an eye out for bowel movements and do the same thing: Set him on the potty and say, "Poopy goes in the potty." Make or Choose a song that you and your son will sing every time he will sit on the potty or buy a picture books he will really like and read them together when ever he sits on the potty. It's also wise to not put underwear on your child for several weeks after he's learned to use the potty; just put on his pants. Underwear feels too much like a diaper and he might return to old habits. Get more helpful parenting tips at Self Help Magazines
